Every step counts: Run4Veterans returns to Polar Park Sunday

Veterans Inc. hosts its annual Run4Veterans 5K at Polar Park on Nov. 8, raising money to help veterans and their families access housing, health care and other support services

Some run for the finish line. Others walk, roll or simply show up to support a cause. But when hundreds of participants gather at Polar Park on Sunday, Nov. 8, the goal extends well beyond completing 3.1 miles.

The annual Run4Veterans 5K, organized by Worcester-based Veterans Inc., will bring runners, walkers, veterans and their supporters together to raise money for military veterans and families facing financial hardship, housing instability and other challenges.

The event comes just three days before Veterans Day, offering the community an opportunity to support former service members in a tangible way ahead of the city’s annual ceremonies.

Veterans Inc., founded in Worcester in 1990, provides a range of services to veterans and their families, including housing assistance, employment training, behavioral health care, benefits counseling and emergency financial support. The nonprofit reports having assisted more than 130,000 veterans since its founding and now operates programs across all six New England states, as well as Montana and North Dakota. The organization’s work reflects the range of challenges veterans may encounter after military service, from finding stable housing and employment to navigating benefits, accessing medical care and supporting their families.

Proceeds from Sunday’s event helps Veterans Inc. keep up with assisting the many veterans in the area in a number of ways.

The 5K is designed to accommodate participants of different ages and abilities. Runners can compete in the race, while others may walk or roll the course. Those unable to participate can sponsor a veteran.

Veterans may register to run at no cost.

The event also aims to make the day a community celebration, with appearances by local mascots, including Smiley from the Worcester Red Sox, and WCVB reporter Katie Thompson serving as emcee.

Following the race, participants and spectators can enjoy live music by Specter of Desire, food, drinks, games and other activities at a post-race gathering. Activities begin Sunday morning at Polar Park, 100 Madison St., with runner check-in and packet pickup at 8 a.m.

An opening ceremony and speaking program are scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the race’s 10:30 a.m. start. An awards ceremony begins at 11 a.m., while the post-race celebration continues until 2 p.m.

Registration remains open through race day, and those who register in advance receive a commemorative event running shirt.

The race is one of several events taking place in Worcester in the days leading up to Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, when the city will hold its annual parade and ceremonies honoring those who served.

While those observances recognize military service and sacrifice, Run4Veterans focuses on the practical needs of veterans and their families, providing an opportunity for residents to help fund services that continue throughout the year.

Veterans Inc. offers programs addressing homelessness, employment, counseling, transportation, food assistance and family support, along with services for women veterans and families with children.

The organization’s annual 5K brings those efforts into the public eye while inviting the community to take part, whether by running, walking, volunteering or sponsoring a veteran.

Run4Veterans takes place Sunday, Nov. 8, at Polar Park, 100 Madison St., Worcester. Registration and event activities run throughout the morning, with the race beginning at 10:30 a.m. and festivities continuing until 2 p.m.

Veterans participate free of charge. Others can register through veteransinc.org or request information by emailing run4veterans@veteransinc.org.
