WORCESTER—Central Massachusetts residents still have several chances to skate for free at The Oval Ice Skating Rink in downtown Worcester this month, thanks to a series of community skating days sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

The free skating events continue Monday, Jan. 19, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day from 1-6 p.m., followed by an evening session on Friday, Jan. 23, from 5-9 p.m., and afternoon sessions on Saturday, Jan. 24, and Sunday, Jan. 25, both running from 1-6 p.m. The Oval is located behind City Hall at 455 Main St.

As part of the sponsorship, children ages 12 and under are also eligible for complimentary skate rentals, making the events accessible for families looking for low-cost winter activities downtown.

“For the fourth consecutive year, we’re proud to partner with The Oval Ice Skating Rink to offer free skating events that bring families together and make it easier for people to stay active and connected during the winter months,” said Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. “These events reflect our ongoing commitment to the Worcester community and to creating welcoming, inclusive experiences that support both physical and mental well-being.”

John LaHair, director of marketing for the DCU Center, which manages The Oval, said the free skating days have become a seasonal draw for downtown Worcester. “These free skating days help strengthen the sense of community the rink fosters and have become the highlight of the season,” LaHair said.

The 12,000-square-foot outdoor rink has welcomed more than 90,000 skaters since opening in 2012 and offers skate rentals and concessions throughout the season. Organizers say the events are intended to promote outdoor activity and social connection during the winter months, with ice skating offering both physical fitness and mental health benefits.
