WORCESTER—The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts has opened applications for its 2026 Activation Fund grants, offering short-term funding to help local organizations strengthen their capacity and address community-identified health needs across the region.
The Activation Fund supports one-year projects designed to help nonprofit and community-based organizations advance their operations in ways that can be sustained over time. Grants typically range from $50,000 to $125,000, according to an announcement from the foundation.
Organizations interested in applying must first submit a brief concept paper by March 1. Applicants invited to advance to the next stage are notified in late March, with final funding decisions expected in mid-June. Funded projects are anticipated to begin in July.
“Over the years, we have seen how strategic one-time investments can transform the capacity of organizations and achieve sustained health impacts,” said Dr. Amie Shei, president and CEO of The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts, in the announcement. “The Activation Fund allows us to support innovations and improvements beyond organizations’ regular activities to activate greater change and improve health in Central Massachusetts.”
Since launching the Activation Fund 26 years ago, the foundation has awarded nearly $13 million through the program. Previously funded projects have included building and renovation efforts, equipment purchases to expand service delivery, and professional development initiatives aimed at strengthening internal operations, according to the release.
A list of Activation Fund recipients from 2020 through 2025, along with brief project descriptions, is available on The Health Foundation’s website.
The opening of the 2026 grant cycle coincides with the launch of the foundation’s new 2026–2030 strategic framework. The framework outlines priorities focused on strengthening community-based organizations, empowering local communities, promoting effective and equitable policies and systems, and stewarding assets to improve health outcomes throughout Central Massachusetts.
