WORCESTER—After guiding the Holy Cross women’s basketball team to a winning record as interim head coach, Candice Green has officially been named the program’s permanent head coach, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Kit Hughes announced Monday.
“I am thrilled to announce Candice Green as the permanent head coach for Crusader women’s basketball,” Hughes said in the announcement. “Her work not only during the interim period, but also over the course of her time here at Holy Cross, has been deeply impactful for our student-athletes as she has enhanced their skills, confidence and the championship culture within our program.”
Green, who took over the Crusaders in August as interim head coach, led the squad to a 16-10 record this season, including a 9-6 mark in league play. She now becomes the eighth head coach in program history, taking over one of the most successful teams in Patriot League history.
A legacy of success
Holy Cross boasts a conference-leading 13 Patriot League Tournament titles, including back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024. The Crusaders is also the only team in the league to have won an NCAA Tournament game, doing so twice—first in 1991 and again last season, when the HC defeated UT Martin 72-45 before facing national runner-up Iowa.
As an assistant coach at Holy Cross, Green helped lead the team to a regular season title and tournament championship last year. She also played a key role in developing standout players, including Bronagh Power-Cassidy, who was named Patriot League Championship MVP and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Cara McCormack, an All-Patriot League honoree.
“I am truly honored for the opportunity to continue leading the Holy Cross women’s basketball program,” said Green in a statement. “Holy Cross is uniquely positioned to provide student-athletes with the opportunity to relentlessly pursue excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.”
A coaching journey through the Patriot League
Before joining Holy Cross, Green spent four years at Fordham, where she served as interim head coach for the 2022-23 season, leading the Rams to a 19-13 record and a WNIT appearance. She previously spent three years as an assistant at Colgate, where she played her collegiate career and served as a two-time team captain.
As Holy Cross celebrates its 50th year of women’s basketball, Hughes said he believes Green is the right leader for the future. “It gives me great pride and confidence to move into the future with Coach Green at the helm, and I know our program will continue to thrive under her leadership. The best is yet to come!”
