Man charged in fatal Fitchburg shooting

New Jersey man arrested after August 3 incident on Mechanic Street; arraignment expected Monday

FITCHBURG—A 42-year-old New Jersey man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that took place early Saturday morning in Fitchburg.

According to a statement from Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr., Jonathan Reyes-Contreras is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

Police were called to the area of Mechanic Street around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, for a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound outside a vehicle. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died a short time later.

Reyes-Contreras is expected to be arraigned Monday in Fitchburg District Court.

Authorities say the shooting does not appear to be random and that the individuals involved were known to each other. The investigation is ongoing and is being handled by Fitchburg Police detectives and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Worcester County DA’s office.
