WORCESTER—A Worcester man has been indicted for murder in connection with the 2008 stabbing death of a Becker College student, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. announced on Wednesday.

A Worcester County Grand Jury returned the indictment against Marquis Brown, 40, charging him with one count of murder in the death of 19-year-old William Smith. Smith, a Becker College student at the time, was fatally stabbed in the chest on Sept. 21, 2008, during a large street fight in the area of North Ashland and Dix streets.

That night, Worcester police responded to a report of a large fight near 101 Highland St. When officers got to the scene, there were multiple altercations in progress. As one officer approached the intersection of North Ashland and Dix, he saw someone carrying Smith, who had sustained a stab wound to the chest. Smith was rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Another man, Steven Black, 39, of Worcester, was also indicted in connection with the investigation. He faces one count of perjury. Black was arraigned in Worcester Superior Court on June 6 and released on $5,000 cash bail with a GPS monitoring device and conditions of release.

The indictments come after what the District Attorney’s office described as a continuing investigation into the fatal stabbing. Brown’s arraignment date has not yet been announced.

According to the announcement, the case reflects the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to pursue justice, even in long-unsolved cases.
