WORCESTER—A freight train derailment on Cambridge Street Sunday afternoon left two rail cars overturned, but officials say there is no danger to the public as the ethanol inside remains securely contained.
Worcester firefighters responded to the scene at 640 Cambridge St. around 12:20 p.m., where they found multiple derailed cars, two of which had toppled over. According to the Worcester Fire Department’s announcement, an inspection confirmed that the ethanol remained inside the tankers with no leaks detected.
Crews are now awaiting P&W Railroad to begin the process of uprighting the cars, which will require site preparation and a crane. That work is expected to take place Tuesday.
The two overturned cars also made contact with a nearby building, though officials found no structural damage. Power to the building was shut off as a precaution.
The Worcester and Westborough fire departments remain on-site with foam trailer crews as a safety measure, but officials reiterated that there is no risk to the community.
