‘Not like many people’; man runs 154 miles for young patients

David Filar’s journey across Massachusetts aims to support hospitalized children with toys for the holidays

WORCESTER—A Worcester man is preparing to tackle a grueling four-day, 154-mile run across Massachusetts to support UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center (CMC).

Beginning on Black Friday, Nov. 29, David Filar starts his ambitious trek at the New York border in West Stockbridge and expects to finish at Martin’s Park in Boston on Monday, Dec. 2.

Filar’s training includes running nearly 40 miles daily, a challenge he embraces wholeheartedly. “You have no idea how many people have advised me against running it at the end of November and early December,” Filar said in a statement. “But I’m not like many people.”

Filar, 33, chose this run to raise funds for UMass Memorial CMC’s Child Life Program, which provides developmental and engaging toys tailored to the unique needs of hospitalized children. His goal is to brighten their holidays and hospital stays.

“The funds raised will support our Child Life Program’s effort to ensure each patient receives the right toy to meet their unique needs this holiday season,” said Kendra Frederick, child life program manager at UMass Memorial in a press release. “We are so grateful for Dave’s fun and creative approach to fundraising, and we look forward to cheering him on—especially in person as he runs through our campus on Sunday.”

Caregivers and staff line the route to encourage Filar as he passes by UMass Memorial Medical Center on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Filar’s drive stems from personal experience. Diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in fifth grade, he spent much of his childhood under medical care. In recent years, lifestyle and dietary changes have enabled him to manage the condition without medication.

“I’ve been really fortunate,” Filar said. “I think it’s time for people to give back when you’ve become any bit of comfortable.”

Filar is no stranger to pushing limits. This year, he committed to running a minimum of 3.1 miles every day—a feat he has upheld while preparing for his marathon trek.

Beyond physical challenges, Filar’s late-November timing presents unpredictable weather conditions, something he embraces as part of the experience.

His journey will culminate with a Giving Tuesday event on Dec. 3, where he will present a ceremonial check to UMass Memorial CMC, symbolizing the funds raised during his run.

Outside of running, Filar is a footwear designer whose work includes collaborations with organizations like the Museum of Fine Arts, David Ortiz’s Children’s Fund, and Shawn Thornton’s Foundation. His passion for giving back aligns seamlessly with his personal and professional ethos.

Filar’s run is more than a physical challenge; it’s a testament to resilience and compassion. As he covers 154 miles from West Stockbridge to Boston, his journey will inspire many while directly benefiting children in need.
