Scandinavian fest, record sale, Maya opens: 5 things this weekend

Worcester County. It’s got a little bit of everything, no matter your idea of fun. The Worcester Guardian highlights some events you may want to consider attending over the weekend

Here are five picks of things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. Throw it on the turntable: WICN’s Studio 50 transforms into a pop-up shop filled with thousands of pieces of vinyl (albums! records!), from jazz to classical to classic rock, blues, folk, country and more for its 5th Annual Vinyl Sale. At low prices, collectors can browse this phenomenal selection with all proceeds benefiting WICN Public Radio. The sale takes place on Friday, June 21, from noon to 6 p.m. at 50 Portland St., Worcester.
  2. 121st Scandinavian Midsummer Festival: The Swedish National Federation of Worcester celebrates the 100th anniversary Jubelieum (1924-2024) with this big, family festival at SAC Park in Shrewsbury on Saturday, June 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fest officially kicks off at 11:15 a.m. with a pole raising ceremony and dances. Other fest features include Swedish meatball lunch served from noon to 3 p.m., Snackholm food and refreshments available all day; cash bar; demos, crafts and games by the Boston Irish Vikings; performance by fiddler Lydia Levins; the Revontulet Dancers; and vendors featuring Scandinavian foods and gifts, DIY flower crowns, homemade baked goods and more. There are also kids activities, a bouncy house, Tomola and raffles. Free admission and free parking. No dogs, pets.
  3. Maya Lounge grand opening: Worcester’s newest music venue and fusion-food restaurant/bar celebrates its opening in grand style on Saturday, June 22, starting at 11 a.m. The festivities feature two stages of music with performances by local bands including Funky Treehouse, WARP, and deejays, fresh food, arts and crafts vendors, and drink specials.
  4. Swaying to the music: This is a good band. The Hip Swayers, that is. They’re going to be at Husky’s Pub on Saturday, playing upbeat, fun, classic country and rockin’ Americana. And yes, they’ve got an accordion. The show goes from 8-11 p.m.
  5. Joyner Fest 2024: Hometown hip-hop hero Joyner Lucas leads a show that also includes Fridayy and Conway the Machine on Saturday, June 22, at the Palladium. This Worcester native and South High alum gained notoriety as a poet, singer, rapper and producer, particularly after the release of his single “Ross Capicchioni” in 2015.
