School Committee seeks update on Worcester aviation program amid strong demand

WORCESTER—A Worcester School Committee member is seeking an update on an aviation career exploration program serving district students, as interest in the initiative continues to outpace available space.

At a meeting earlier this month, the committee unanimously voted to refer an order from member Dianna Biancheria to the administration, requesting details on the Exploring Aviation program, including student enrollment, capacity limits, participating schools and the potential for expansion. Biancheria did not respond to requests for comment from the Worcester Guardian; this story will be updated if she responds.

The Worcester Aviation Career Exploration Club is a Scouting America program that Worcester Public Schools middle school students attend weekly, offering hands-on exposure to aviation careers at Worcester Regional Airport.

According to Worcester Public Schools officials, 23 students from Sullivan Middle School and Forest Grove Middle School are currently enrolled. On program days, students are transported by WPS bus to the airport, where a district staff member meets them before Scouting America staff lead the sessions.

Due to space and safety constraints at the airport, the program is capped at 30 students, with a preferred enrollment of about 25. While the number of available seats is limited, district officials said the program plans to expand recruitment next year to include students from all Worcester middle schools to ensure broader geographic representation.

The initiative launched earlier this year, introducing students to aviation-related careers through tours, demonstrations and hands-on activities designed to illustrate the fundamentals of flight and airport operations.

“The Worcester Aviation Career Exploration Club offers young students experience in specialized job fields to prepare them for real world careers, namely work within the aviation industry,” said Dave Garvin, manager of workforce programs for the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, in an article introducing the program.

The program operates in partnership with the Massachusetts Port Authority, Atlantic Aviation, JetBlue, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, with volunteers playing a key role in its operation.

“MassPort and airline staff have generously volunteered hundreds of hours of their personal time to get this program up and running for WPS students,” said Emily Lehman Miller, interim administrative director of Worcester Public Schools, in a statement. “We are very grateful to them and are thrilled to be able to continue to provide this opportunity for WPS students in the years to come.”

The School Committee’s referral does not indicate when the administration is expected to provide its update.

As demand for career-focused programming grows, initiatives such as this one are part of broader efforts to connect students with real-world learning opportunities and potential career paths at an earlier age.

This story has been updated to clarify that the aviation program is operated by Scouting America and serves Worcester Public Schools students.
