WORCESTER—The Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks (DPW&P) announced Thursday that crews begin work to rehabilitate underground sanitary sewers on Shrewsbury Street, Plum Street, and a portion of East Worcester Street starting Feb. 18.

According to the DPW&P press release, the project involves cleaning the sewers and installing a structural liner to reinforce the pipes and extend their service life. While streets will remain open, intermittent traffic and parking disruptions are expected. The nine-month project will be managed by DPW&P and contractor Green Mountain to minimize disruptions.

Initial work locations include:

  • Feb. 18-19: Granby Road to Imperial Road
  • Feb. 20-21: Imperial Road to Adams Street
  • Feb. 24-26: Adams Street to Putnam Lane
  • Feb. 26-28: Putnam Lane to Marshall Street

These dates are subject to change, and “no parking” signs will be posted in affected areas.

The most noticeable work kicks off in late April or early May, when an above-ground sewer bypass is set up. Until then, work focuses on spot repairs at select manholes. Temporary lane closures will be in place as needed.

Residents should expect temporary message boards and signage alerting them to construction. DPW&P will provide ongoing updates as the project progresses.
