WORCESTER—Four Worcester snowplows now bear names as clever as they are community-driven, thanks to a citywide “Name a Snowplow” contest involving Worcester Public Schools students.
Announced Thursday by the Department of Public Works & Parks (DPW&P) in collaboration with Worcester Public Schools, the winning names are:
- Scoop Dogg – Submitted by Mrs. Stephanie Trainor’s Grade 6 Class, Francis J. McGrath Elementary School
- Sleetwood Mac – Submitted by Ms. Victoria Alexander’s Grades K-2 SAIL Class, Norrback Avenue School
- William Scrapespeare – Submitted by Ms. Aimee Kewley’s Grades 9-12 Theater Magnet Class, Burncoat High School
- Snow More Mr. Ice Guy – Submitted by Ms. Sydney Lamothe’s Grades 9-10 Advisory Class, University Park Campus School
Students across all grade levels submitted 50 unique names, which were narrowed down to four winners through more than 500 public votes.
“Congratulations to our Worcester Public School students on a great contest,” said City Manager Eric D. Batista in the announcement. “Your enthusiasm and the imaginative names you submitted were inspiring to see. Thank you to the public for your engagement in this fun campaign and selecting excellent winners. We are excited to have four of our most visible snowplow trucks now named and showing off our students’ creativity.”
Superintendent Dr. Rachel H. Monárrez praised the students’ ingenuity: “Our Worcester Public Schools scholars never fail to impress with their creativity and humor. The winning snowplow names are not only clever but a fun way to engage in English language arts lessons. It’s wonderful to see our scholars’ imaginations at work while bringing laughter and joy to our community.”
The winning classrooms will be honored at the Worcester City Council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Students will have their photos taken with their named snowplows and receive DPW&P swag as part of the recognition.
