SHREWSBURY—While many are planning barbecues for the long holiday weekend, a different kind of summer celebration is making waves at Lake Quinsigamond.
On Wednesday, July 2, the Webster Water Ski Collective will host its Second Annual Veterans Ski Day at the Donahue Rowing Center in Shrewsbury — a full day of adaptive water skiing designed to honor and include veterans of all abilities. The event is one of only a few nationwide selected as part of the USA Water Ski & Wake Sports Veterans Program, and organizers say it’s shaping up to be one of the largest in the country.
Last year’s inaugural event drew dozens of veterans from across the region for a mix of thrills, teamwork, and community spirit. This year’s gathering aims to grow on that momentum, offering both disabled and able-bodied veterans the chance to experience the freedom of water skiing, many for the first time.
“It’s a powerful way to give back to those who’ve served,” said Ryan DesRoches, Director of Adaptive Skiing at WWSC, in the event announcement, “and to show that the water is for everyone — regardless of ability or experience.”
Trained instructors and adaptive equipment will be on hand to support participants throughout the day. Beyond the water, veterans and volunteers will also enjoy a BBQ-style lunch catered by Webster-based restaurant Bistro Eighty Ates, known for its smoked pork and hearty summer fare.
The event is free for participating veterans and made possible through support from USA Water Ski & Wake Sports, local sponsors, and a team of volunteers from the Webster Water Ski Collective.
