Baseball has its magic numbers, like a .300 batting average, 20 home runs, 100 RBIs, a 3.00 ERA. It is lacking in magic dates, though.
Opening day varies year to year. So does the All-Star Game and the first game of the World Series. One date never changes, though, the Fourth of July.
Traditionally, that is when teams have identified who and what they are. Winners or losers. Contenders or pretenders. July 4 is not an infallible gauge of future success or failure but has a good track record over the last, say, 150 years.
The minor leagues are a little different. By Independence Day teams know exactly where they have been, but the major league trade deadline is looming and promising prospects will be coming and going.
At the close of business Saturday the Worcester Red Sox’ record was 40-42. The WooSox have never finished a season below .500 since they arrived here from Pawtucket in 2021. The Boston Red Sox were 39-48 at the end of Independence Day. The organization has had both its major league team and Triple-A team finish in the in the red the same year just once in the 21st Century.
That was 2015 when the American League Red Sox were 78-84, the Pawtucket Red Sox 59-85. That is the only time such a thing has happened in the last 32 seasons.
This is the second time the WooSox have been below .500 on July 4. They recovered very nicely the previous time, 2024. Worcester was 40-44 at the end of the holiday, then went 39-27 the rest of the way and finished at 79-71.
That was the year Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel and Kristian Campbell came up after Independence Day.
Worcester heads into this week with with a streaky resume to its credit. The WooSox are just game below .500, but have not been a win-one, lose-one team. It has been more like win-four, lose-four. They are arriving at Polar Park with things looking up, though.
They won at Syracuse Sunday to take that series, 4 games to 2.
This week the WooSox are scheduled to play six games with the Rochester Red Wings, the main reason Worcester is below .500. The WooSox are 4-12 (0-5 at Polar Park) versus Rochester in 2026 and have been outscored, 65-101 in those games.
Since the teams last met on June 13, a 3-2 Rochester victory, the Red Wings have cooled off. They are 8-9 since then.
The Tuesday through Friday night games are scheduled 6:45 starts. First pitch Saturday afternoon is set for 4:05. Sunday’s is 1:05 p.m.
The week’s promotion schedule highlights include:
Tuesday features Taco & Tequila night, fans can bring their dogs, there AARP tickets, Mass Lottery State of Winning and a Shrewsbury town takover. Wednesday is a First Responder night and Wepa Night celebrating Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Thursday is Deuces Wild with $2 hot dogs, $2 Polar water and $2 select draft beers; a meet and greet with former Boston pitcher Oil Can Boyd and a Fitchburg town takeover. Friday features UniBank Fireworks to the music of NickelCreed and a Spencer Town Takeover.
Saturday is headlined by a WooSox Free Youth Clinic from 10-11 in the morning for ages 7-14 with registration required. It also includes Faith & Family Day, Southeast Asian Heritage Day, Workers Credit Union AR Day, a Framingham Town Takeover, Sunset Catch on the Field post-game, weather permitting); and Scout Sleepover, also weather permitting.
Sunday there will be a Wilyer Abreu Gold Glove Bobblehead giveaway for the first 5,000 fans. It will be a WEPA Day celebrating the Dominican Republic and kids, even adult ones, can run the bases after the game.
The usual roster comings and goings have included the return of Mickey Gasper from Boston, and no wonder he is such a fan favorite. Gasper wasted no time in rejoining the WooSox in Syracuse and began to contribute immediately.
He was 7 for 14 in five games there and has a nine-game Triple-A hitting streak going back to May 1. Gasper is 14 for 31 (.452) during that streak to lift his average from .275 to .320.
Also back, in this case from injured list, is pitcher Tyler Uberstine. He made two appearances in Syracuse and struck out seven Mets in four innings of work.
Similar work at Polar Park during the upcoming week might help lift the WooSox’ record back into black.
