WORCESTER — Worcester is taking another step toward expanding high-speed internet access, seeking ideas from broadband providers and technology experts as it explores the possibility of a citywide fiber network.
The city announced Thursday that it has issued a Request for Information (RFI) inviting vendors and industry stakeholders to help shape a long-term vision for a Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network that would deliver fiber-optic internet directly to homes, businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations.
Unlike a formal bid for construction, the RFI is intended to gather information, ideas and potential approaches before the city determines how to move forward.
“The City of Worcester is actively working to bridge the digital divide,” City Manager Eric Batista said. “We want every household, business, school, and nonprofit to have access to next generation connectivity. This RFI is the next step toward that goal and is part of our broader strategy to strengthen digital equity, expand economic opportunity, and enhance public services.”
According to the city, officials are seeking input from organizations with expertise in broadband infrastructure, network operations, emerging technologies, digital inclusion and public-private partnerships.
The information collected through the process is expected to help inform Worcester’s long-term broadband strategy and identify ways to maximize access to reliable, high-speed and affordable internet service.
The city emphasized that the request is not a competitive procurement and does not require vendors to submit binding proposals. Instead, officials say the process is intended to gather information before making decisions about the project’s future.
Responses are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2.
