Worcester Launches Aviation Career Program for school students

Innovative partnership aims to inspire future aviation professionals

Billed as one of the first middle school-focused aviation programs of its kind

WORCESTER—Worcester Regional Airport is taking off as a hub for career exploration with the launch of a new aviation education program targeting middle school students in Worcester Public Schools (WPS). The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), Heart of New England Council, Scouting America, Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, and WPS have joined forces to create the Exploring Aviation program, set to debut on Jan. 29.

Billed as one of the first middle school-focused aviation programs of its kind, the initiative will expose students to diverse career opportunities in the aviation industry. Over the first half of 2025, students participate in interactive sessions at Worcester Regional Airport, engaging with industry professionals from Massport, Atlantic Aviation, and airlines such as JetBlue Airways, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to prepare young people for life by providing them with valuable skills and experiences,” said Patrick Hanrahan, director of Development at Heart of New England Council, Scouting America, in a press release. “We look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have on our community.”

Students kick off their exploration with field trips to Worcester Regional Airport on Jan. 14 and 16, where they’ll familiarize themselves with airport operations and learn about the program.

“This program is an excellent opportunity to showcase aviation careers and inspire the next generation of Massachusetts’ workforce to pursue professions in this growing industry,” said Andy Davis, Worcester Regional Airport director, in the announcement.

The program’s broader mission aligns with the Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to fostering economic opportunities for the city’s youth.

“This program is creating a career avenue, right here in our city, for our students to explore as they prepare to enter the workforce,” said Tim Murray, president & CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The initiative also ties into WPS’s focus on empowering students with real-world experiences.

“Thanks to this partnership with Worcester Regional Airport and other valued partners, our scholars will have real-world experiences that inspire them to reach new heights,” said Dr. Rachel H. Monárrez, superintendent of WPS.

The program falls under the broader Exploring initiative by Scouting America, which helps youth aged 10–20 gain hands-on career experience. This collaboration, which will provide students with valuable exposure to aviation, represents a significant step forward in building local pathways to the workforce.
