How much does it cost to live in Worcester? What do local income and employment figures reveal about the economy? And how is the city’s population changing?
Residents looking for answers to questions like these have a new resource from the Worcester Regional Research Bureau, which recently updated its interactive online dashboards that make a wide range of local data available to the public. The dashboards are part of the bureau’s 2026 Worcester Almanac, an annual compilation of statistics and information about the city, surrounding communities and Worcester County.
For the first time, the organization is making the almanac’s information available through separate interactive dashboards, allowing users to explore charts, tables and maps organized by subject rather than relying solely on the publication’s traditional PDF format.
The bureau has launched its Demographics & Economy Data Dashboard, which includes information on population, household composition, income, poverty, employment, housing costs and other measures of economic and social conditions. In it, residents can check out subjects that include home values and rents, homelessness, disability, languages spoken, internet access, office space and the local hotel industry.
How is this helpful, or useful? The information could assist residents researching housing affordability, business owners evaluating economic conditions, nonprofit organizations identifying community needs and public officials weighing policy decisions.
The dashboards also offer a resource for anyone interested in understanding how Worcester compares with surrounding communities or how conditions have changed over time, depending on the data available for each measure.
The Research Bureau plans to release additional dashboards weekly, covering government, transportation and infrastructure, education, public safety, health, weather and sports.
The traditional Worcester Almanac will still be published as a PDF later this fall, according to the bureau’s announcement. The new format is a big change in how the WRRB presents its research. Rather than requiring readers to search through a single report for individual statistics, the dashboards organize information into subject-specific collections that can be explored online.
The bureau compiles information from multiple sources to provide a statistical picture of Worcester and the surrounding region. The almanac is intended for use by policymakers, businesses, community organizations and the general public.
The interactive format also comes as Worcester faces continuing questions about housing affordability, population growth, development and the local economy — issues for which reliable data can help inform public discussion.
The Demographics & Economy dashboard is available through the Worcester Regional Research Bureau’s online Worcester Almanac collection. Additional dashboards are scheduled for release in the coming weeks.
