A stretch of road beside one of Worcester’s busiest youth baseball complexes will soon bear the name of a man who spent more than half a century helping children learn the game.
City officials formally rename a portion of Mayfield Street as “Doug Hannam Way” during a ceremony at 5 p.m. Friday, honoring the late Douglas J. Hannam Jr. for his decades of service to youth sports and the Worcester community.
The renamed section runs from Parker Street to Chandler Street along Beaver Brook Park, home to Ted Williams Little League, an organization with which Hannam was involved for more than 55 years.
According to a city announcement, Hannam’s involvement with the league spanned nearly every role imaginable. Over the years, he served as a player, umpire, coach, league president and board member, becoming one of the most recognizable figures in local youth baseball.
His impact extended beyond a single league. From 1999 through 2012, Hannam served as District 4 Little League administrator, overseeing youth baseball and softball programs for players ranging from tee-ball through age 17 across the region.
Hannam retired from both his position as District 4 administrator and from his career at Saint-Gobain in 2012. He died on May 31, 2025.
City officials said the location of the tribute was chosen because of Hannam’s lifelong connection to Ted Williams Little League and Beaver Brook Park.
Beyond baseball, Hannam also played a role in civic life, serving on the Worcester Parks Commission and the Citizen Advisory Council.
The street renaming ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, June 26, on Mayfield Street adjacent to Beaver Brook Park.
For generations of Worcester families, Hannam’s name has long been associated with youth sports. Beginning Friday, it will also become part of the city’s map.
