WPI earns R1 research university status, and that’s a big deal

New designation highlights WPI’s growth in research spending and doctoral education

WPI focuses much of its research efforts on artificial intelligence (AI)

WORCESTER—Worcester Polytechnic Institute got the golden key, so to speak, in the world of researching. The college just announced that it has been designated an R1 research university, a classification that places it among the nation’s top-tier institutions for research spending and doctoral education, according to a new classification published by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The R1 designation recognizes institutions with very high research activity, a milestone WPI reached by spending $66 million on research and awarding 88 doctoral degrees in fiscal year 2023.

“This recognition is a real accomplishment for our entire community, especially our talented faculty members, students, and staff, who have demonstrated their excellence and commitment to high-impact research and innovation,” WPI President Grace Wang said in a press release. “WPI’s research is expanding knowledge, enabling new solutions, and enriching the education of our students.”

WPI focuses much of its research efforts on artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and life sciences. According to the press release, WPI has also expanded its research centers, joining federal-industry-university consortia and building new facilities such as PracticePoint, an academic-industry center for medical technology development, and Sagamore Labs, an advanced manufacturing hub.

“The work of our researchers amplifies the impact of WPI,” said Bogdan Vernescu, vice president and vice provost for research and innovation, in the press release. “WPI’s research portfolio has grown to record levels in recent years, thanks to the quality and creativity of our faculty, staff, and students, who collaborate across disciplines in ways that promote scientific and technological advancements.”

WPI’s research growth has also fueled economic development, with university-supported breakthroughs leading to 25 startup companies, which have collectively raised $1.7 billion in capital and created more than 500 jobs. These startups focus on cutting-edge technologies, including lithium-ion battery recycling, AI in healthcare, and surgical robotics.

“WPI’s researchers are trailblazers, transforming complex challenges into groundbreaking solutions that drive progress and inspire collaboration with industry partners,” David Ortendahl, WPI executive director of corporate partnerships, said in the press release.

The university has also invested in seed grants to fund early-stage research, with more than $400,000 awarded in 2024 to support projects focused on lasers, AI in bioengineering, and mental health research. Vernescu noted that these grants are expected to attract further funding and expand WPI’s research impact.

“Researchers across WPI are using these seed grants to set the stage for continued funding for groundbreaking discoveries with the potential to make tremendous positive impact in Worcester, Massachusetts, and the world,” Vernescu said.

With this new R1 classification, WPI joins an elite group of 187 institutions nationwide recognized for their contributions to cutting-edge research and innovation.
