WORCESTER—WCUW is inviting the community to hit the dance floor this weekend with back-to-back parties celebrating the lives of two of its late DJs.
On Saturday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m., the nonprofit station hosts a Sock Hop in its Front Room at 910 Main St. to honor Paul Lauzon. Family members spin selections from Lauzon’s personal archives, and Elvis tribute artist Dan Fontaine slides in with a taste of rock ’n’ roll nostalgia.
Lauzon, who passed away in May, was remembered by WCUW as “one of the station’s most cherished programmers.” Since the late 1990s, he brought listeners a spirited mix of rock and doo-wop, cultivating a loyal audience that tuned in week after week. “His legacy resonates not only through the airwaves but also within our community, reminding us of the vibrant local culture we strive to celebrate,” the station shared in May.
The groove continues Sunday, Aug. 24, at 5 p.m., when April Mae & the June Bugs perform a high-energy set in memory of Milton Cordiero, WCUW’s longtime doo-wop guru known affectionately as “Uncle Milty.” Known for his warm on-air presence, Cordiero was a fixture of WCUW’s doo-wop programming and a favorite of listeners who treasured his love of vintage harmonies and classic grooves. The band’s blend of doo-wop, boogie-woogie, and swing celebrates that legacy in his honor.
Founded in 1973, WCUW has long been a hub for eclectic programming and community-driven music in Worcester. Known for championing local voices and underrepresented genres, the station has cultivated a loyal following both on-air and through live events in its Front Room performance space.
Admission to both events is a goodwill donation, which will be matched up to $10,000, according to the station. Free parking is available across the street.
