WORCESTER—On Monday, an 8-inch water main ruptured on Heard Street near Stafford Street at the railroad bridge, causing significant damage to the roadway and depositing material on nearby railroad tracks.

Consequently, Heard Street is closed to all traffic between Stafford Street and Genesee Street, though pedestrian access is permitted on one side. Fortunately, no customers are currently without water.

An inspection confirmed that the bridge over the railroad is structurally sound, and CSX has resumed normal rail operations.

The Department of Public Works and Parks (DPW&P), in collaboration with MassDOT bridge officials and a contractor, is determining the scope and method of roadway repairs. Once approved, the contractor will start the repairs, which will include fixing the water main. The project is expected to take up to a week to complete, allowing the roadway to reopen to traffic.
