WORCESTER—When Ken Bates graduated from Worcester State University in 1987 with degrees in urban studies and psychology, he couldn’t have guessed that he’d one day return to campus to be honored for a lifetime of leadership. This fall, he did just that.

Bates, president and CEO of Open Sky Community Services, received Worcester State’s Outstanding Professional Achievement Award during the university’s Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony on Oct. 3.

“My education at Worcester State University set me up to be the leader that I am today and was instrumental in my decision to pursue what has been an extremely fulfilling career in human services,” Bates said in a statement. “I am deeply appreciative to be a recipient of the Outstanding Professional Achievement Award and to be an alumnus of Worcester State.”

The award is presented to a Worcester State graduate who exemplifies the highest intellectual and ethical standards in their professional or civic life. Honorees are recognized for hard work, integrity, and community impact.

“These alumni truly embody the spirit of being a Lancer leader,” said Worcester State University President Barry Maloney in the school’s announcement. “Their remarkable contributions and impact, both in their careers and communities, are a testament to the transformative power of a Worcester State education. We are incredibly proud to celebrate their success and unwavering dedication to making a difference.”

Bates was recognized for his commitment to supporting individuals and families facing complex challenges, and for leading Open Sky with what the organization described as “compassionate and humble” direction. Under his leadership, Open Sky has become one of Central Massachusetts’ largest human services providers, employing more than 1,300 people and serving over 8,000 individuals each year through nearly 150 programs.

A lifelong Worcester resident, Bates has spent his career in behavioral health and human services, emphasizing inclusion, opportunity, and dignity.

The Distinguished Alumni Awards are the highest non-degree honor bestowed by Worcester State. Recipients are chosen by a committee of alumni board members and university representatives after a nomination process.

Open Sky Community Services, based in Worcester, has served the region for more than 50 years, providing behavioral health, housing and disability services while promoting equity and inclusion across Central Massachusetts.
