3 finalists named for new school committee clerk

The action stems from a motion filed to consider the reorganization of the support staff assigned to the school committee

WORCESTER—Three finalists for the position of clerk of the Worcester School Committee were identified in a special meeting of the body on Nov. 13.

Mayor and Chair Joseph Petty and members Molly McCullough, Jermaine Johnson, Susan Mailman and Tracy O’Connell Novick accepted the names of Kate Benoit, Emanuela “Emma” Abbascia and Kristi Turgeon for consideration for the post of clerk at the next regularly scheduled meeting of the School Committee on Thursday, Nov. 16. Novick participated remotely.

Benoit is a communications specialist with the Barrington, Rhode Island Public Schools.

Abbascia is a career counselor with MassHire.

Turegon is executive assistant to the senior vice president at UMass Memorial.

The applicants were previously interviewed by the Committee on Governance & Employees chaired by School Committee Member Laura Clancey during “3-and-3” sessions held over two days last month—on Oct. 23 and 26.

The action stems from a motion filed by Novick on July 12 “to consider the reorganization of the support staff assigned to the School Committee, to include establishment of a full-time clerk of the School Committee, whose sole responsibilities shall involve work directly related to the operation of the School Committee and the conduct of its business.”
