WORCESTER—The Worcester Housing Authority’s (WHA) Great Brook Valley (GBV) Gardens is set to receive upgraded broadband infrastructure through a state grant aimed at improving internet access in public and affordable housing.
The Healey-Driscoll administration and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) announced $10.4 million in grant funding through the Residential Retrofit Program (RRP) to enhance high-speed internet access for nearly 8,000 housing units across 26 Massachusetts communities.
Aervivo Inc., the internet provider for Great Brook Valley, was awarded the largest share—$6.3 million—to upgrade service for 6,446 housing units, including 592 at Great Brook Valley. Other Worcester locations set to benefit include Plantation Towers (107 units), Washington Heights Apartments (404 units), and Courthouse Lofts (118 units).
“In this day and age, reliable internet connectivity is a critical need,” WHA CEO Alex Corrales said in the announcement. “This is so important for our families at GBV and will help open up educational, job, and social opportunities.”
The project modernizes in-unit cabling and improve broadband reliability, prioritizing affordable service for residents.
Gov. Maura Healey emphasized the importance of digital access, stating, “Our efforts start with providing access to communities that have been neglected for far too long and empowering them with the tools to expand their network, access essential services, and advance their careers.”
Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll echoed that sentiment, calling the RRP “a transformative investment” that ensures Massachusetts communities are better connected.
