On Saturday afternoon, the Greyhounds needed five periods and 75 shots to defeat Southern New Hampshire University to win the NE-10 tournament title.

Jonathan Surrette scored 13:05 into the second overtime to lift Assumption (25-7-0) past the Penmen (14-14-2) at a packed Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.

Surrette’s goal, a wrist shot high to the blocker side, was assisted by Shane Sullivan and Ryan Decker.

Sullivan also had the Greyhounds’ second goal, which was assisted by John Woernle and Patrick McKiernan.

Leo Piandes’ goal, assisted by Jake Lavoie and Sean Corliss gave Assumption a 1-0 lead.

The Greyhounds took 19 shots in both the first and second periods, 16 in the third, nine in overtime and 12 in double OT.

It was the longest NE-10 final in history.

Thomas McLarnon made a career-high 56 saves for Assumption, which last won the postseason title in 2022.

McLarnon was named the most outstanding player of the tournament.

The All-Tournament Team included Surrette and teammate Ronny Paragallo.

The NE-10, consisting of six teams (Assumption, Southern New Hampshire, St. Michael’s, Post, Franklin Pierce and Saint Anselm) is the only Division 2 hockey conference in the country.
