hosted by the city’s Department of Public Works & Parks, the event commemorates its thirty-eighth consecutive year as a Tree City USA designation.
Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and administered in Massachusetts by the Department of Conservation and Recreation Urban and Community Forestry Program, Tree City USA is an “awards program that provides public attention and national recognition for local commitments to community trees and forests.”
The occasion features the ceremonial planting of two Black Gum (Nyssa Sylavatica) trees. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Department of Sustainability and Resilience, more than 300 additional trees are slated for planting this spring across the city, with a particular emphasis on neighborhoods facing environmental justice issues.
The event is coordinated in partnership with the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, the United States Department of Agriculture, the City of Worcester Urban Forestry Tree Commission, the Green Worcester Advisory Commission, and National Grid.
The event takes place on the Acton Street side of Mulcahy Field.
