Breaking: Paul Saucier named Worcester police chief

City Manager Eric Batista makes appointment official after 18 months as interim chief

New Police Chief Paul Saucier has been with the WPD for 30 years

WORCESTER—After 30 years with the Worcester Police Department and 18 months serving as its interim chief, Paul B. Saucier has finally been named permanent chief—a role he has been vocally and publicly hoping for since his appointment.

City Manager Eric D. Batista announced the decision Friday, with Saucier set to officially take on the position March 1, 2025. A swearing-in ceremony will be held March 14 at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Batista cited Saucier’s leadership and commitment to strengthening relationships between the Worcester Police Department (WPD) and the community as key reasons for his appointment.

“Since day one of Saucier’s appointment as Interim Chief, he has gone above and beyond working to make improvements within the WPD and to build a strong relationship between the Department and Worcester community,” Batista said in the announcement. “He has been open to feedback and has been receptive to and embracing change.”

Saucier, who has been with the WPD for more than 30 years, said he is honored to take on the role permanently.

“It is a privilege to lead the dedicated men and women of the Worcester Police Department,” he said in the announcement. “I am excited to continue our shared mission of fostering a culture founded on honor, integrity, and professionalism.”

Saucier has served as interim chief for the past 18 months and previously spent nearly eight years as deputy chief. His extensive experience includes commanding the Operations Division, S.W.A.T. Team, and Bureau of Investigative Services. A graduate of the FBI National Academy, Saucier also holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England University.

The appointment follows months of leadership under Saucier as the city navigated public safety challenges and department reforms.
