WORCESTER—The city’s Veterans Services Division is hosting two public ceremonies this week to honor and remember veterans, including a National Vietnam Wreath Laying Ceremony and a Borinqueneers Day of Recognition.
The National Vietnam Wreath Laying Ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 24, at 3 p.m. at the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Green Hill Park, located at 50 Officer Manny Familia Way. The memorial, dedicated in 2002, spans four acres and is designed as a space for reflection and education. It includes three distinct sections: the Place of Flags, Place of Words, and Place of Names. The Place of Words displays excerpts from letters written by service members who died in Vietnam, while the Place of Names honors each Massachusetts resident who lost their life in the conflict.
The Borinqueneers Day of Recognition is being held on Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m. at the Korean War Memorial, located at 52 Foster St., across from Union Station. The ceremony recognizes the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers, a distinguished unit composed primarily of Puerto Rican soldiers who served during the Korean War.
According to the announcement, “This is an opportunity to honor their service, sacrifice, and legacy.”
Veterans and the general public are encouraged to attend. Members of the American Legion have been invited to participate in uniform to show solidarity and pay tribute.
“Let’s stand together in remembrance, pride, and respect,” wrote Commander Bill Moore of American Legion Post 435 – Vernon Hill in the event invitation.
Both events are organized by the City of Worcester Department of Health and Human Services – Veterans Services Division.
