WORCESTER—The Worcester County Courthouse on Main Street was evacuated and closed for the day Monday following what officials described as an unattended death at the building.
According to a statement from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police detectives were called to the courthouse around 11:30 a.m. to investigate. The building was expected to reopen Tuesday.
The Telegram & Gazette reported that the courthouse was evacuated shortly after police arrived, with court officials citing a medical emergency. A witness told the paper that authorities covered a body located near the main floor of the building’s atrium.
About 200 people who were inside for court business were escorted outside, where some were seen visibly shaken. Law enforcement activity was concentrated on the ground floor of the courthouse, located at 225 Main St.
Spectrum News 1 Worcester confirmed via social media that the Worcester Police Department evacuated the building at approximately 11:30 a.m., and that the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation.
Authorities have not released the name of the deceased, and no foul play has been confirmed. The investigation remains ongoing.
This Week in Worcester reported that a man died from a fall to the first floor inside the courthouse’s central atrium. The building has three floors with balconies overlooking the atrium, and witnesses described a sudden commotion before court officers cleared the area.
Court personnel evacuated the courthouse shortly after the incident. Officials said the courthouse is expected to reopen on Tuesday.
