From Winter in Wooville’s stadium-sized sparkle to a tree lighting event in Kelley Square, Festival of Lights on the common, a She’s Busy return to Greendale’s and the EcoTarium’s Frosty Festival, Worcester is packed so full of festive action this weekend it’s a miracle anyone can pick just one. We had trouble picking five

Here are the Worcester Guardian’s five picks for things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. Snow Much Fun at Polar Park: Winter in Wooville debuts Thursday, Dec. 4, and Polar Park is going full North Pole. From 6–9 p.m., the WooSox are flipping the stadium into a glowing holiday playground packed with thousands of lights, hands-on crafts, Santa meet-and-greets, mascot photo ops, and enough cocoa and roasted nuts to make even the Grinch rethink his life choices. The festivities don’t stop after opening night. Winter in Wooville runs Thursdays through Sundays from Dec. 4–19, then switches to a nightly schedule Dec. 20–23, all from 6–9 p.m. Expect cookie decorating, ornament-designing, card-making, face painting, a 30-foot Christmas tree and a Charity Tree Village showcasing nonprofit-decorated evergreens. Local artisans and small businesses fill the Merry Merry Market, making it an easy place to knock out some holiday shopping between mugs of mulled cider. Tickets run $18 for adults and $12 for kids when purchased in advance and children two and under are free.
  2. The brightest idea for Friday night: Worcester flips the switch on winter this Friday as the Festival of Lights returns to the Common, bringing music, food, art, circus acts, skating and enough glow to make your utility bill blush. Running 4:30–9 p.m., the event features a joint set by hometown stars Ricky Duran and Blue Light Bandits, with the tree lighting at 6 p.m. This year debuts several new light installations created through a national artist call, plus Glow Park on Franklin Street, roving fire performers and a giant inflatable projection piece called “The Snowglobe” that’s already angling for “most photographed object in Worcester.” Add 15 food vendors, a beer garden, youth performances, free ice skating on the Oval (rentals $6), and a late-night open house at the Worcester Public Library, and you’ve got yourself a very lit evening—literally. Road closures start early, free parking kicks in at 2 p.m., and the winter programming continues all season.
  3. Kelley Square’s holiday circus: If you’re in the mood for pure, unfiltered Worcester cheer, the Kelley Square Tree Lighting Extravaganza is ready to darn your stockings (does anyone even know what that means?). Happening Saturday, Dec. 6, from 3–5 p.m., this annual Canal District tradition packs enough holiday mayhem to power the entire city’s light display. The big moment — the tree lighting itself — hits at 5 p.m. Expect the full North Pole delegation: Santa and Mrs. Claus, plus backup dancers Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch, Mickey, Goofy and a squadron of elves. Local businesses hand out samples, tastings, giveaways and warm fuzzies. Also, hop on a horse-drawn wagon ride, sip Dunkin’ hot chocolate, nibble Table Talk pies, test-drive Polar seltzer flavors and escape the cold inside Jersey Mike’s. Burncoat High’s marching band and choir handles the soundtrack, WXLO spins the holiday tunes and city leaders add ceremonial words before the switch is flipped. Tree goes up, lights go on, Worcester celebrates.
  4. Still busy, still brilliant: She’s Busy — Worcester’s own harmony-driven powerhouse born in the ’90s and beloved ever since — returns to their natural habitat this Saturday: Greendale’s. Led, as always, by sisters Selena Wilson and Lisa (Wilson) Brumby, the band delivers those rare, real harmonies you only get when the voices come from the same family tree and the same childhood sandbox. Think the warm, interlocking vocals of Fleetwood Mac or Crosby, Stills & Nash — no studio magic, just lungs, soul and decades of chemistry. Guitarist/singer Brett Brumby (Lisa’s other half in life and onstage) rounds out the latest incarnation, which has kept the She’s Busy vibe alive through the years without ever losing the spark that made them a local legend. Expect classic rock, classic energy and that classic Greendale’s feel — a musicians’ favorite for a reason. She’s Busy plays Saturday, Dec. 6 at Greendale’s. Show starts at 8:30 p.m. A perfect night for anyone who prefers their harmonies organic and their rock ’n’ roll unvarnished.
  5. Frosty Fun, Zero Chill: EcoTarium’s annual Frosty Festival returns this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6–7, with a full day of winter-themed programs running 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect Santa sightings, beloved movie characters, a Pumpernickel Puppets show, and carols from the Clark Bars. Kids can get their faces painted, families can grab holiday photos, and seasonally decorated train rides will be running with an extra ticket. Keep an eye on the EcoTarium’s site for the day-of schedule—there’s a lot packed into this chilly two-day bash.
