WORCESTER—Worcester’s annual Festival of Lights returns to the Common on Friday, Dec. 5, with a full lineup of performances, winter displays, food vendors and free ice skating as the city launches its seasonal lighting installation.
The event runs from 4:30-9 p.m. and features a joint performance by two Worcester-rooted acts: Ricky Duran, the NBC “The Voice” runner-up, and the Blue Light Bandits, a four-piece rock group with more than 5 million streams. The tree lighting is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The festival marks the opening night of the municipal winter lighting installation, which will remain in place through March 1, 2026. Several new temporary lighting works will debut, supported by funding from the New England Foundation for the Arts’ Making It Public Grant as well as the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District and the City of Worcester.
The installations include “Kinetic Perspective” and “Waves,” both designed by Studio JF Creative; “Allium,” a 10-foot recycled-plastic light sculpture by Everything Good Studio; and “The Snowglobe,” a large inflatable 3D projection piece by Fractaltribe. Glow Park, interactive amusements on Franklin Street, roving circus and fire acts, and illuminated decorations across the Common round out the offerings.

The Cultural Development Division was one of 10 municipalities in Massachusetts selected by NEFA and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council for a public art training and grant initiative.
Following a national call, artists were chosen to create the temporary installations featured during the festival and throughout the winter season.
“Festival of Lights is a truly magical winter tradition on the Worcester Common that brings our downtown neighborhood to life each year, celebrating community, togetherness and the joy of the season,” City Manager Eric D. Batista said in a statement. “We are extremely grateful to our community partners whose collaboration makes it possible to create a night of fun, inclusive, family friendly activities that brighten Worcester for all and spread light throughout the holiday season.”
This year’s event includes 15 food vendors, a beer garden hosted by Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company, community organizations, Santa visits, face painting, and performances by local youth groups including the Burncoat High School Quadrivium Chorus, Jo Ann Warren Studio, Many Voices: Mechanics Hall Youth Singers, Midland Street Elementary Youth Choir and North High School.
Complimentary ice skating on the Worcester Common Oval is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Skate rentals will be available for $6.
The Worcester Public Library at 3 Salem Square stays open until 8:30 p.m. for the festival and offers hot cocoa, family crafts, giveaways, photo space and a Friends of the Library holiday pop-up sale.
Free parking begins at 2 p.m. at the Pearl-Elm Garage and McGrath Parking Lot. Standard rates apply at other municipal lots and meters. Road closures on Franklin Street and Front Street begin at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
The Festival of Lights programming continues beyond opening night, with ongoing winter activities presented by the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District through February. Highlights include live ice sculpture carvings, holiday lights photo walks, glow-in-the-dark installations, “winter warm-up” giveaways with local businesses, and a community snowman and snow sculpture competition.
