WORCESTER—After weeks of work, the Heard Street bridge, off Stafford Street/Webster Square, is now officially open to traffic.

MassDOT completed its final inspection on Wednesday, and traffic has resumed as normal. However, officials said to expect some limited alternating traffic patterns over the next few weeks as additional work is completed.

The closure began on July 8 when an eight-inch water main ruptured near the bridge, causing extensive damage to the roadway and affecting nearby railroad tracks. The bridge was found to be structurally sound, and normal rail operations resumed quickly.

The Department of Public Works and Parks (DPW&P) in partnership with MassDOT and contractors, completed the repairs, which included fixing the water main. Pedestrians have had limited access throughout, and now, full vehicular access has been restored.
