A hotel guest remains in critical condition after being shot during a chaotic early-morning incident at a Sturbridge hotel that ended with the suspected shooter dead, according to authorities.
Police and emergency responders were called to the Sturbridge Plaza Hotel, 400 Haynes St., shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday after reports that a vehicle had been driven into the building.
Additional reports indicated that shots had been fired into the hotel, striking a guest, according to a joint announcement from the Sturbridge Police Department and Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the suspect had gone to the hotel looking for two people known to her.
When officers arrived, they found a hotel guest suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Harrington Hospital before being airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center’s University Campus, where he remained in critical condition Thursday.
Authorities said investigators do not believe the injured guest was one of the two individuals the suspect had been seeking.
According to the announcement, two police officers and a Massachusetts State Police trooper made contact with the suspect and attempted to speak with her. Authorities said the suspect then fired her weapon again and suffered what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel performed extensive lifesaving measures at the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not released the names of either the suspect or the injured guest.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by the Sturbridge Police Department, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, the State Police Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Firearms Identification Section and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
