WORCESTER—Over the weekend, Worcester’s very own weather-predicting groundhog, Cornelia, emerged from her burrow at the EcoTarium’s annual Groundhog Day celebration—and she saw her shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter for the city.
The event, a beloved tradition, was highlighted by an official Groundhog Day proclamation delivered by Mayor Joe Petty in the museum’s Animal Corner. Families and visitors gathered to witness Cornelia’s highly anticipated forecast and participate in a day filled with science activities, hands-on exhibits, and hot cocoa.
“No matter the forecast, our visitors always celebrate this day with enthusiasm, embracing the excitement and fun of this time-honored tradition,” said Noreen Smith, President & CEO of the EcoTarium, in the announcement. “This is really Cornelia’s day when she has center stage and can show off her keen prognostication skills. She is a beloved member of the EcoTarium family, and we are very proud of her.”
Guests also had a chance to see Cornelia up close, as her caretakers provided insights into her daily routine and care.
