Indian Lake reopens after cyanobacteria advisory lifted

City officials confirm safe cyanobacteria levels after weeks-long closure, reminding residents to stay cautious around surface scums

WORCESTER—And the water is safe again. Indian Lake has been reopened for public use following clearance from the city’s Department of Inspectional Services. Recent tests confirmed that cyanobacteria levels have dropped below the threshold for public health concern.

The lake was originally closed on Aug. 1 after tests revealed cyanobacteria concentrations exceeding state safety limits. The cyanobacteria present, primarily from the genera Planktolyngbya and Aphanocapsa, can produce harmful toxins when found in high densities.

Cyanobacteria, while naturally occurring, pose a health risk at elevated levels. City officials urge residents to wash off immediately if they or their pets come into contact with any surface scums. In the event a pet ingests the scum, veterinary attention should be sought.

The city maintains an ongoing monitoring program to ensure the safety of its lakes for both recreation and wildlife. For more information on cyanobacteria and safety tips, residents can view the city’s educational video series, The Blue Space Minute, shown above.
