WORCESTER—Worcester residents soon have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of local government through the return of the Mayor’s Civics Academy.
Announced by Mayor Joseph M. Petty, the program launches in March 2025 and consists of five biweekly in-person sessions aimed at educating participants about city operations.
The Civics Academy features presentations from various city departments, including the Treasury Department, Health and Human Services, and Worcester Public Schools.
“This will be an excellent opportunity for residents to get to know their city better,” said Petty in the announcement. “Now more than ever, it is critical for residents to be informed about their local government.”
The program is supported by a planning committee that includes District 1 City Councilor Jenny Pacillo and former Mayor Joe O’Brien.
“Resident engagement and transparency are two key components of a well-supported community,” Pacillo said. O’Brien emphasized the program’s importance in empowering residents to become effective advocates for their neighborhoods and organizations.
Applications are open to Worcester residents only, with a cap of 60 participants. Sessions will be recorded and shared on the city website for broader accessibility. Applications close on Jan. 13, 2025, and selected participants will be notified the week of January 20.
