SHREWSBURY—Social media lit up Thursday morning with questions about heavy police presence, helicopters and sirens in town. Hours later, officials confirmed the activity was tied to a fatal shooting near Jordan Pond.
According to a joint statement from Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr., a 911 caller reported being in an altercation on the pathway by the pond shortly before 9 a.m. Dispatchers heard what sounded like gunshots during the call, after which the caller became unresponsive.
Police said officers arrived to find the victim, who was taken to UMass Medical Center and later died from his injuries.
Using drones, officers located a suspect at a nearby home. With help from the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactical Operations Team and Air Wing, police said the man surrendered peacefully. He was taken into custody and remains at the Shrewsbury Police Station.
The investigation is ongoing, with state police detectives, crime scene services, and a K-9 unit assisting. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victim or suspect. The suspect is expected to be arraigned Friday in Westborough District Court.
Police noted that several nearby departments provided support, including Auburn, Boylston, Grafton, Northborough and Westborough.
Officials extended condolences to the victim’s family, who have asked for privacy.
