Neon ice skating, rock, Sondheim: 5 weekend things

Worcester’s weekend lineup runs from glow-in-the-dark skating and local rock shows to Sondheim, cabaret and a rare international concert

Here are the Worcester Guardian’s five picks for things to do in Worcester this weekend:

  1. Glow hard or go home at the Worcester Common: If you’ve been thinking, “You know what this winter needs? More neon,” then this one’s for you. The Downtown Worcester BID is lighting up the Worcester Common Oval with a Glow-in-the-Dark Park pop-up during evening skating hours. Expect glowing swings and see-saws, playful vibes, and a whole lot of after-dark energy while you skate, stroll, or just soak it all in. It’s free, family-friendly, and open to all ages. Skating admission and rentals are separate if you’re hitting the ice — but the glow? That part’s on the house.
  2. Heartland rock with a queer edge hits Vincent’s: Giuliano brings his gritty, storytelling brand of rock ’n’ roll to Vincent’s on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 9 p.m. to midnight, pairing folk-rooted songwriting with big, Springsteen-style heart. A producer, LGBTQ+ activist and unapologetic storyteller, Giuliano’s music leans into rich guitar work, earthy vocals and lyrics that aren’t afraid of politics, vulnerability, or loving Massachusetts even when it’s cold and falling apart. Expect a set that mixes originals with a few well-chosen covers — the kind of late-night club show where the songs feel lived-in, the emotions run high, and dancing through the despair is very much encouraged.
  3. A patriotic cabaret with prizes, not pom-poms: Greater Worcester Opera is throwing a birthday party for America — and you’re invited. The 2026 Winter Cabaret: Happy Birthday America! takes place Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at Loring Auditorium, 65 Briarwood Circle, pairing a concert of music from (and about) America with a raffle, silent auction and complimentary refreshments. The evening celebrates the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary with a warm, feel-good mix of song and community, featuring performances by John Arnold, Michael Celularo, Elaine Crane, Donna DeWitt, Betsy Fiedler, Tom Frates, Amanda Lanza, Ben Morse and Lonnie Powell, accompanied by Olga Rogach. Raffle tickets are sold separately. Snow date is Sunday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m. — check the Greater Worcester Opera website for updates.
  4. Fairy Tales of the complicated kind: If you think you know Into the Woods, think again. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s darkly funny, emotionally rich mash-up of classic fairy tales opens Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Prior Performing Arts Center, courtesy of the College of the Holy Cross Department of Theatre & Dance. This isn’t a “once upon a time” you coast through — it’s a sharp, thoughtful look at what happens after happily ever after, when wishes come true and consequences come knocking. Cinderella, Little Red, Jack and Rapunzel all get their moment, but not without wrestling with regret, responsibility and the messiness of real life. Performances continue through Feb. 15, with evening and matinee options, and tickets are $20. Consider this your excuse to revisit the fairy tales you grew up with — and realize they were never that simple to begin with.
  5. Brazilian country, Worcester volume: Turn it to 11 Saturday night when Brazilian superstars Jorge & Mateus bring their high-energy sertanejo sound to the DCU Center on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 8:30 p.m. The award-winning duo—Jorge Alves Barcelos and Mateus Pedro Liduário de Oliveira—have been jamming arenas since forming in 2005, blending heartfelt lyrics, soaring vocals and crowd-singalong hooks that have made them one of Brazil’s biggest musical exports. Their live shows are known for big emotion, bigger rhythms and an infectious sense of joy that translates even if you don’t speak Portuguese. Part of their 20-year celebration tour, this Worcester stop is a rare chance to catch an international act that doesn’t come stateside often—and a reminder that country music has many accents.
