WORCESTER—Abby’s House has named Paula Sasso as chair of its board of directors, elevating a longtime volunteer and financial steward into the organization’s top governance role as the nonprofit approaches its 50th anniversary.
The appointment was announced by the organization this week. Sasso, who first became involved with Abby’s House decades ago as a college student, has served in multiple leadership capacities over the years, including on the board of directors, the finance committee and as chair of the investment committee.
According to the announcement, Sasso’s connection to Abby’s House began when she was a 19-year-old student at the College of the Holy Cross, inspired by the work of founder Annette Rafferty. Since then, she has volunteered at the shelter, supported the organization’s thrift shop, and played a role in strengthening its long-term financial planning.
In 2025, Sasso received the Annette Rafferty Award, which recognizes extraordinary service to Abby’s House. She is also a member of the organization’s Legacy Circle and has designated Abby’s House as a beneficiary of her will, according to the nonprofit.
“Paula’s lifelong dedication and leadership inspire everyone around her,” Executive Director Julie Orozco said in the announcement. “Her journey with Abby’s House began years ago as a college student volunteering in the shelter, and to now have her serve as our board chair is truly a full-circle moment.”
Abby’s House credited Sasso with helping establish its investment committee and supporting efforts aimed at maintaining the organization’s financial stability as it continues to expand programs and services.
Founded in Worcester, Abby’s House provides shelter, affordable housing and advocacy services for women and children experiencing homelessness and housing instability. The organization said it will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026, a milestone it plans to celebrate with a gala event highlighting five decades of service.
