Here are the Worcester Guardian’s five picks for things to do in Worcester this weekend:
- We know you will enjoy the show: Sit back. The Turn It Down All-Stars return to strip down another rock classic—this time tackling “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” with the lush vocal harmonies of REHarmonix, a 20-member a cappella chorus. Expect a semi-acoustic spin on one of the most beloved albums ever made, plus an opening set from local legends Chuck and Mud with Walter Crockett. All proceeds benefit Pernet Family Health Service and it takes place on Saturday, Nov. 15, 7–9:30 p.m. at the JMAC Theatre (Jean McDonough Arts Center).
- Follow the Yellow Brick Road (Again): The Hanover Theatre is rolling out the Technicolor carpet for “The Wizard of Oz” on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. Bring the family—or your inner child—and relive Dorothy’s unforgettable journey through Oz, complete with ruby slippers, flying monkeys and “Over the Rainbow.” Tickets are $10, with general admission seating. For more information, call the box office at 877-571-7469.
- Tower of Power meets the FrontRoom hour: Guitarist Jerry Cortez of Tower of Power fame trades the big stage for WCUW’s cozy FrontRoom this Sunday at 4 p.m. Joined by Crosstracks host Elayne Fikucki on vocals and Debbie Gurrieri Maloney on flute, Cortez will mix classic covers with his own originals for an intimate afternoon of funk, soul, and groove. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., $15 cash at the door. Light refreshments provided—or BYO snack. Parking’s right across the street.
- Boston’s Queen of Comedy: Christine Hurley: Christine Hurley brings her no-holds-barred, family-friendly standup to Off the Rails on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. A perennial favorite on the East Coast circuit, Hurley’s résumé includes Denis Leary’s Comics Come Home at the Garden, “America’s Got Talent,” Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race,” and countless club dates from the Laugh Factory to Aruba. Expect sharp, relatable jokes about parenting, life and the chaos that makes us laugh. Tickets available at the venue — arrive early for a good seat.
- A pear-fect craft for kids: Kids ages 8–12 can stitch up something sweet at the Worcester Public Library on Friday, Nov. 14, from 3–5 p.m. Using felt, stuffing, and a few basic sewing skills, participants will create their own adorable pear plushies to take home. It’s a fun, hands-on way to learn needle threading, knot tying and simple stitching — no experience needed.
