Shrewsbury Street to celebrate Italian heritage with parade, music and family festivities Sunday

Worcester’s Italian Heritage Parade returns Oct. 11, with a procession down Shrewsbury Street and a free festival featuring music, food and family activities at East Park

On Sunday, that heritage take center stage as the Shrewsbury Street Italian Heritage Parade returns, bringing a procession through the neighborhood and a day of music, food and family festivities to nearby East Park.

The Oct. 11 parade steps off at noon at Belmont Street and travels along Shrewsbury Street to Washington Square. The celebration continues at Cristoforo Colombo Park, commonly known as East Park, where a vendor fair, live entertainment and children’s activities will fill the afternoon.

Admission is free, and the event takes place rain or shine.

This year’s parade is led by Grand Marshal Robert “Gus” Giordano, owner and operator of Maxwell Silverman’s Luciano’s Restaurant at Worcester’s Union Station.

Other honorees include Anthony Petrone, who servse as parade mayor; Mia Layman, named Miss Italian Heritage; and Jim Polito, recipient of the Community Voice Award.

The festivities begin before the parade, with a soccer tournament scheduled for 9 a.m. The East Park Vendor Fair opens at 10:30 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m., featuring local artisans, crafters, vendors and food trucks.

Live music begins at 1 p.m., while free bounce houses and other children’s activities will offer entertainment for younger visitors.

The parade and festival celebrate the Italian-American heritage that has long been part of Shrewsbury Street’s identity. Generations of Italian immigrants and their descendants helped establish the neighborhood’s restaurants, businesses and community institutions, leaving a cultural imprint that remains visible today.

Although Shrewsbury Street is now widely known as one of Worcester’s premier dining destinations, its Italian-American roots remain an important part of the neighborhood’s character.

The annual parade offers an opportunity to recognize that history while bringing together residents, families and visitors from across the city.

Organizers are encouraging spectators to line Shrewsbury Street for the procession before heading to East Park, where the festivities will continue throughout the afternoon.
