WORCESTER—Worcester residents have some chances coming up to lace up their skates for free this winter as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts partners with The Oval Ice skating rink to offer four complimentary skating sessions in February.
The free skating days take place at the Worcester Common, 455 Main St., on the following dates:
- Friday, Feb. 7, 5-9 p.m.
- Friday, Feb. 14, 5–9 p.m.
- Saturday, Feb. 15, 1-9 p.m.
- Sunday, Feb. 16, 1-6 p.m.
Children 12 and under also receive complimentary skate rentals, making the event even more accessible for families.
“For the third year running, we’re excited to team up with the Oval ice skating rink, offering free skating events that bring families together and encourage healthy, active living,” said Jeff Bellows, Blue Cross Vice President of Corporate Citizenship & Public Affairs, in the announcement. “This ongoing partnership underscores our commitment to the Worcester community, promoting wellness and creating lasting memories for residents.”
Since its reopening in December 2012, the Oval has welcomed more than 90,000 skaters and remains a popular winter attraction. In addition to skate rentals and concessions, limited free parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in the garage beneath Worcester City Hall.
“We’re grateful for the continued support from Blue Cross, including these free-skating events, which greatly enhance the sense of community that the Oval ice skating rink fosters,” said John LaHair, director of marketing for the DCU Center and ASM Global, which manages the rink.
Blue Cross Blue Shield stresses that its initiative aligns with its focus on health and wellness, and ice skating is known to support cardiovascular health, balance, coordination, and mental well-being.
