UMass Memorial, St. V’s named among best regional hospitals

Worcester facilities earn recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings

WORCESTER—Two Worcester hospitals have been recognized among the best in Massachusetts in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.

UMass Memorial Medical Center was ranked the top hospital in Worcester and fifth overall in Massachusetts. The teaching hospital was rated “high performing” in 18 adult procedures and conditions, including cancer, cardiology, geriatrics, pulmonology and lung surgery. U.S. News noted the hospital’s role in caring for patients with complex needs across multiple campuses, including University, Memorial and Hahnemann.

Saint Vincent Hospital was ranked second in Worcester and 13th in the state. The hospital earned “high performing” marks in 10 areas, including congestive heart failure, diabetes, lung cancer surgery, hip and knee replacement, and pneumonia.

“We are honored to be recognized as a Best Regional Hospital,” Saint Vincent CEO Denten Park said in a statement announcing the ranking. “This achievement reflects the hard work, unwavering dedication and compassion of our entire team—physicians, nurses and staff—who go above and beyond every day to provide outstanding care.”

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals nationwide, analyzing outcomes, patient safety and levels of nursing care. Only 13% of those reviewed received a Best Hospitals designation.

UMass Memorial and Saint Vincent are the only Worcester hospitals to make the annual list, which placed Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital at the top statewide.
