United Way honors local people, companies making community impact

The United Way of Central Massachusetts has been doing this for more than 100 years. This week, the influential nonprofit handed out six prestigious awards

WORCESTER—The United Way of Central Massachusetts this week celebrated its 104th annual community event to celebrate the organization’s impact, relevance and sustainability by awarding those who personify these attributes.

On Monday, June 17, UWCM’s president and CEO, Tim Garvin, presented six prestigious awards to companies and individuals who have demonstrated an overwhelming commitment to the citizens of central Massachusetts.

The following received awards:

  • Alexis de Tocqueville Award: Grace and Jack Roche
  • Volunteer of the Year Youth: Maryah and Jordan Muldrow
  • Volunteer of the Year Adult: Joyce Augustus
  • Labor Award: Michael Cipro, president of National Association of Letter Carriers Chapter 12
  • Audrey Reid Award: Maria Juncos-Gautier, Barry Maloney and Mary Jo Marion of the Latino Education Institute at Worcester State University.
  • Stoddard Award Small Business: Lutco
  • Stoddard Award Large Business: Consigli Construction
  • Coghlin Community Service Award: Worcester Food Security Initiative including 19 community partners

President and CEO of United Way Worldwide, Angela Williams, also took the stage during the ceremony to deliver some words.

Amongst numerous impressive positions, Williams has had a long standing relationship in nonprofit leadership as the president of Easter Seals and chief administrative officer of YMCA of the USA. She most recently was listed among the 2022 Nonprofit Times’ Power and Influence Top 50 list and Forbes’s 2021 List of Women Over 50 Creating Social Change at Scale.

The annual celebration, which took place at South High school, included food from Charcuterie by Cherise, Mrs. Moriconi’s Ice Cream, Polar beverages and a special highlight from Pastry Chef Medina. Crocodile River Music also performed as part of the event.
