WORCESTER—The city officially snips the ribbon on its newest spray park on Monday, Aug. 4, celebrating the addition of a major summer amenity to the University (Crystal) Park area.
City Manager Eric D. Batista, District 4 City Councilor Luis Ojeda, and Parks Commissioner Robert Antonelli Jr. are expected to speak at the ceremony, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at 44 Gates St.
Though the ribbon cutting is just ahead, the University Spray Park quietly opened to the public on Saturday, July 19, offering daily water play from noon to 7 p.m. through Sept. 1.
Located at 965 Main St., the park is the newest addition to Worcester’s network of public spray parks, pools, and beaches—designed to help residents stay safe and cool during the region’s hottest weeks.
Other city spray parks include East Park (143 Shrewsbury St.) and Greenwood Park (14 Forsberg St.). Public beaches with lifeguards on duty are open through Aug. 23 at Bell Pond, Coes Pond, Indian Lake, and Shore Park.
Worcester also offers access to both municipal and state-run pools, including Crompton Park Pool (city), Dennis F. Shine Memorial Pool, and Veterans Memorial Pool (both state-operated). For those seeking indoor options, both the Greendale YMCA and Worcester JCC offer swimming facilities and fitness programs.
City officials urge residents to take precautions during extreme heat, including hydrating, limiting outdoor activity, and checking in on neighbors—especially seniors or those without air conditioning. For more, visit the City’s Summer Safety webpage.
