A water main break on Norton Drive in Worcester Friday morning caused low water pressure in parts of the Burncoat neighborhood and forced traffic detours as city crews responded to the scene.
The Department of Public Works confirmed the break Friday and said crews were working alongside the Worcester Police Department to address the situation.
According to the city, water service was shut off to one business directly affected by the break. Residents in the surrounding Burncoat area may experience reduced water pressure while the system is repressurized.
“Water has been shut down to an isolated business,” the city said in a statement. “Residents may be experiencing low water pressure in the Burncoat area, and that is currently rebuilding.”

Traffic was also affected by the break, with police diverting vehicles around the area. City officials urged motorists to follow posted detours and directions from officers on scene.
District 1 City Councilor Tony Economou said the break had been isolated and that water service was expected to return as the system continued to repressurize.
“Norton Dr. water main. It has been isolated to the area,” Economou wrote in a social media post. “If you are experiencing no water now, the system is re-pressurizing so water will be returning soon if it hasn’t already.”
The cause of the break was not immediately released. No injuries were reported.
City crews remained on site Friday morning as repairs continued.
