Winter parking ban in effect

City opens garages, restricts street parking during snowstorm

WORCESTER—A declared winter parking ban is now in effect citywide as Worcester prepares for an expected snowstorm, according to a city announcement.

The ban took effect at 9 p.m. Monday and remains in place until lifted. During the ban, parking is prohibited on either side of main arteries, emergency and bus routes, and downtown streets critical to traffic flow. On all other streets, parking is allowed only on the odd-numbered side, unless otherwise posted.

All municipal parking garages are free to vehicles that enter after 5 p.m. Monday and will remain free until the parking ban is lifted, the city said. Event rates still apply for special events.

Residents are encouraged to use the following municipal garages:

  • Federal Plaza Garage, 570 Main St.
  • Pearl & Elm Garage, 20 Pearl St.
  • Worcester Common Garage, 3 Eaton Place
  • Union Station Garage, 225 Franklin St.
  • Major Taylor Garage, 30 Major Taylor Blvd.

Sand pickup and recycling drop-off are available at 1065 Millbury St. Sand is also available at 22 Albany St. and 299 Clark St. prior to and following plowing operations.

The city warned that towing and ticketing may be enforced during the ban to keep streets clear for plows and emergency vehicles. Residents can check whether their street is affected by visiting worcesterma.gov/streets/winter-weather/winter-parking.

During the storm, residents are urged to limit travel, leave extra time when driving, and stay clear of plows and other road treatment vehicles. The city also reminded residents that sidewalks abutting their property must be cleared of snow and ice within 10 hours of the end of the storm. Residents who are able are asked to clear snow from around fire hydrants and catch basins and not to throw snow in the street.

Questions can be directed to Worcester 311 by dialing 3-1-1, emailing 311@worcesterma.gov, or using the 311 app. Residents seeking a towed vehicle are advised to contact 311.
