WORCESTER—The Diocese of Worcester commemorates its 75th anniversary with a solemn Mass on Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral. The event marks 75 years since the diocese’s founding on March 7, 1950, when Bishop John J. Wright was installed as its first bishop, separating it from the Diocese of Springfield.
According to the announcement from the diocese, Bishop Robert J. McManus presides over the Mass, joined by Archbishop Richard Henning of Boston, Bishop William Byrne of Springfield, and clergy from various religious communities, including the Benedictine and Assumptionist orders.
The Mass highlight the diocese’s ethnic diversity, featuring music from the Cathedral Choir, the African Choir of St. Andrew Mission, the Vietnamese Choir of Our Lady of Vilna, and members of the Hispanic Music Ministry at St. Paul Cathedral. Readings will be in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, with intercessory prayers in multiple languages, including Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Tagalog, Twi, and Swahili.
Following the Mass, a public reception takes place in the Cenacle.
