Worcester man convicted in 2017 child kidnapping, bridge attack

Jury finds Joshua Hubert guilty of attempted murder, strangulation, kidnapping

WORCESTER—A Worcester County Superior Court jury has convicted a city man of kidnapping and attempting to kill a 7-year-old girl in 2017 by throwing her off a bridge into Lake Quinsigamond.

Joshua Hubert, 43, of Worcester, was found guilty Wednesday of two counts of attempted murder, one count of strangulation, and one count of kidnapping a child, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

He was acquitted of two counts of aggravated rape of a child.

Prosecutors said Hubert kidnapped the girl in the early hours of Aug. 27, 2017, after a family cookout, strangled her, and threw her from the I-290 bridge. The child survived the fall, swam to shore, and found help at a home in Shrewsbury.

District Attorney Early praised the girl’s courage, saying in a statement that she showed “tremendous bravery and strength while testifying.”

Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier also issued a statement thanking investigators and prosecutors for their work and commending the victim’s resilience.

Hubert is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 3 by Superior Court Judge Karin Bell.
