WORCESTER—The Worcester Regional Research Bureau (WRRB) received national recognition recently at the 2024 Governmental Research Association (GRA) Annual Conference held in Asheville, NC.

The WRRB was awarded three of the five top prizes and earned a Certificate of Merit in an additional category, which put the spotlight on its commitment to excellence in public policy and civic research.

Founded in 1914, the GRA is regarded as a premier national organization for professionals engaged in governmental and civic research. Each year, the GRA hosts its Annual Conference in a new location, bringing together experts to exchange ideas and recognize outstanding achievements in the field.

This year, WRRB was honored for the following works:

  • Most Distinguished Research on a Local Government Issue: Environmental (In)Justice: An evaluation of climate impacts on Worcester neighborhoods — This report explores how environmental factors such as temperature, tree coverage, and energy costs disproportionately affect vulnerable populations in Worcester. Accompanied by an interactive StoryMap, the study highlights the intersection of environmental concerns and social vulnerability.
  • Most Effective Education on a Local Government Issue: Building the Future: Investing in Worcester Public School Facilities — This report emphasizes the need for strategic investment in Worcester Public Schools, focusing on state and local partnerships, discretionary spending, and an analysis of the District’s 2017 Facilities Master Plan. The research aims to inform public debate as the District prepares its next Facilities Master Plan.
  • Best Short Form Writing: Questions to Consider about Worcester’s Now | Next Master Plan — Released prior to the public comment deadline, this brief provided an overview of the city’s Master Plan and posed key questions for its implementation. The plan, adopted in March 2024, sets the direction for Worcester’s future development.

In addition, WRRB received a Certificate of Merit in Best Digital Communication for its interactive dashboard, Understanding Your Neighborhood Schools. This tool offers a comprehensive overview of Worcester Public Schools, serving as a valuable resource for families, policymakers, and educators.

The GRA’s recognition of WRRB’s work shows the importance of data-driven research in shaping effective public policy and advancing civic initiatives in Worcester.
